Kolkata, May 7: At least five individuals were injured in a bomb attack on BJP workers in the Panihati area of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. The police reported the incident on Thursday.
The attack occurred just hours after the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari.
According to police, the incident took place shortly after midnight on Dutta Road in Ward Number 2 of the Panihati municipality. Reports indicate that some BJP workers were interacting with the public when a group of assailants on a motorcycle arrived. Eyewitnesses stated that four individuals on the bike threw bombs at the BJP workers.
Three bombs were hurled before the attackers fled the scene, leaving five BJP workers seriously injured.
Tensions escalated in the area following the incident. The injured were admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Police from the Khardah station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information. Central forces have also been deployed, and police have begun patrolling the area to maintain control. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants.
Responding to the incident, Suvendu Adhikari referred to the bomb attack, stating, “For the past 15 years, there has been a politics of revenge in the state. This is the result of 15 years of chaos. Last night, there was a bombing in Khardah, and BJP workers were shot in Basirhat. Those responsible for the violence will not be spared.”
The BJP has alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is behind the bombing in Panihati. Panihati is located approximately seven kilometers from Madhyamgram, where Adhikari’s personal assistant was shot dead while returning home.
The BJP claims that the assailants are linked to the Trinamool Congress, although the TMC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Since the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were announced on May 4, reports of post-election violence have emerged from various parts of the state. Incidents of assaults on TMC workers, vandalism of party offices, and tearing down of posters have been reported, alongside attacks targeting BJP workers, resulting in several injuries.
Police have stated that strict action will be taken against those involved in the violence.
