New Delhi, May 5: Dr. Pranath Tudu of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Binpur Assembly constituency of West Bengal, defeating TMC’s Birbaha Hansda by a margin of 22,977 votes. Dr. Tudu secured 107,238 votes, while Hansda garnered 84,261 votes. The third position was held by CPI(M)’s Rabindranath Sardar, who received 5,619 votes, and Congress candidate Golapi Saren finished fourth with 2,040 votes.
The election saw a fierce contest between the BJP and TMC, with the BJP ultimately waving its flag in this constituency. Voting for the first phase took place on April 23. In the 2021 Assembly elections, TMC’s Debnath Hansda had won with 100,277 votes, while BJP’s Palan Saren came second with 60,783 votes. Both parties changed their candidates for this election.
The Binpur Assembly seat, located in the Jhargram district, was once considered a stronghold for the Left. In recent years, it has experienced significant fluctuations, primarily influenced by rural and tribal voters.
Established in 1951, the Binpur Assembly seat was a two-member constituency in its initial years. Historically, Congress and CPI have won here, with CPI(M) claiming victory five times, CPI three times, Congress three times (last in 1967), the Regional Jharkhand Party four times, and TMC twice.
Notably, the political landscape in Binpur has been complicated by recent changes, with 13,182 names officially removed from the voter list due to reasons such as death, duplication, and migration, despite a minimal Muslim population. However, no detailed information regarding caste or community has been made public. Over the past decade, the BJP has seen significant growth in this region.
