London, July 6: England faced a crushing defeat against Australia by seven wickets in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. After missing the golden opportunity to clinch the title at the historic Lord’s ground, England’s captain Nat Sciver-Brunt acknowledged that the more experienced Australian team outplayed them. However, she emphasized that England has much to be proud of after a remarkable tournament.
Sciver-Brunt scored an unbeaten 58 runs off 53 balls, helping her team reach a total of 150/4. Despite this effort, Australia easily chased down the target in just 17.1 overs, with Beth Mooney contributing a match-winning 64 runs.
Reflecting on the loss, Sciver-Brunt expressed her disappointment, stating, “This defeat is very disappointing. Our tournament has been excellent so far. Today, we were beaten by a fantastic Australian team that effectively utilized their experience in such a big final.”
She felt that the toss played a role in the outcome but admitted that her team failed to set a competitive score on a wicket that was not easy for batting. “Ideally, I would have liked to win the toss and bowl first, but we fell short of a good score on that wicket. It felt challenging to find rhythm with the bat. I think under pressure, their bowlers hit the right areas,” she noted.
Sciver-Brunt praised Australia’s Beth Mooney, who was named both ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’, saying, “Beth Mooney played brilliantly and delivered an outstanding innings today.”
When asked if she expected Australia to play aggressively from the start while chasing, Sciver-Brunt confirmed that this has always been part of the current champions’ strategy. “Yes, absolutely. They have a strong batting lineup,” she added.
Despite the disappointment of losing the final, Sciver-Brunt commended the hard work and unity of the English team throughout the tournament, stating, “We have a lot to be proud of. We worked hard before the tournament. The enthusiasm within the team was remarkable. We played some fantastic matches. This is a group of players who care for each other.”
