Red Card Controversy and Disciplinary Action

The Argentine forward was sent off in the 87th minute after a dangerous tackle on Getafe defender Djené, which was confirmed through a VAR review. At the time of the incident, Atlético Madrid was leading 1-0, but the game ultimately ended in a 2-1 loss for Diego Simeone’s side.

Adding to the severity of the punishment, Correa reportedly directed offensive language towards match referee Cuadra Fernández after receiving his red card. As a result, the committee extended his suspension from one match to five.

Which Matches Will Ángel Correa Miss?

Due to this suspension, Correa will be sidelined for the following La Liga fixtures:

  • Atlético Madrid vs FC Barcelona (Home) – March 17
  • Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid – March 30
  • Atlético Madrid vs Sevilla – April 6
  • Real Valladolid vs Atlético Madrid – April 13

Additionally, as his ban exceeds four matches, Correa will also be ineligible for the Copa del Rey semifinal second leg against Barcelona on April 2. The first leg ended in a dramatic 4-4 draw, making his absence a significant blow for Atlético.

Impact on Atlético Madrid’s Season

With Atlético Madrid currently fighting for a top-four finish in La Liga, Correa’s absence will add pressure on the squad, particularly ahead of a crucial clash against FC Barcelona. His versatility in attack has been vital for Diego Simeone, and the team will now have to adjust their strategy for the upcoming fixtures.
