Shimla, December 24: Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh created a significant challenge for tourists traveling through the region on Monday. Hundreds of vehicles, including those of tourists near the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, were stranded due to adverse weather conditions. The Manali administration and police conducted an overnight rescue operation, ensuring the safety of all individuals.

Road Closures and Initial Challenges
The route from Manali to Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti district was completely blocked due to heavy snowfall, which began in the afternoon and worsened as the day progressed. The stretch between Solang Nala and Dhundi became treacherous, causing vehicles to slow down and eventually come to a halt. The situation escalated when several tourist vehicles near the Atal Tunnel became immobilized due to slippery road conditions.
The stranded vehicles carried a mix of local residents and visitors from other regions, who were returning to Manali after exploring areas around the Atal Tunnel.
Rescue Operation Details
Upon receiving the alert, the Manali administration launched a coordinated rescue operation involving the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), police personnel, and other administrative officials. Despite extreme cold and challenging conditions, the team worked throughout the night to ensure the safe evacuation of all stranded tourists.
DSP Manali, KD Sharma, confirmed that all stranded tourists were rescued and transported to Solang Nala, a safer location. The operation prioritized the safety and well-being of the tourists, providing immediate assistance where needed.
Travel Restrictions and Advisory
The administration has temporarily restricted vehicular movement beyond Solang Nala due to unsafe road conditions. Only emergency vehicles are being allowed to proceed further. Authorities have urged travelers to plan their journeys according to weather conditions and to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
The administration emphasized the importance of using well-equipped vehicles suitable for harsh weather and adhering to safety protocols. Tourists have been advised to remain cautious and avoid taking undue risks.
Weather Forecast and Warnings
According to the Meteorological Center in Shimla, higher and mid-altitude regions of the state are likely to experience continued snowfall and rain today, while plains are expected to remain clear. The forecast predicts clear weather across Himachal Pradesh on December 25 and 26, followed by another spell of precipitation between December 27 and 29 due to an active western disturbance. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated on December 28.
For plains, a dense fog and cold wave alert has been issued from December 24 to 26, advising travelers to exercise caution during early morning and late-night hours.
