Air Quality Deteriorates in NCR as Wind Speeds Drop

Noida, February 17: The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) has once again plunged into the red zone as wind speeds have decreased. Areas in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad are experiencing severe pollution levels.

According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rain and strong winds are expected on February 18, which may improve the AQI thereafter. Data from various monitoring stations in Delhi indicate a worrying situation.

The AQI recorded at Anand Vihar is 319, Ashok Vihar 337, Bawana 321, Burari Crossing 345, and Chandni Chowk 302, all falling within the red zone category. Some areas in the Indraprastha region also reported severe pollution levels. In Alipur, the AQI is 242, DTU 271, and Dwarka Sector-8 234, which are in the orange category. Aya Nagar recorded an AQI of 158 and CRRI Mathura Road 189, both in the yellow category, indicating that pollutants have accumulated in the atmosphere due to reduced wind speed.

In Noida, Sector-125 recorded an AQI of 286, Sector-62 223, Sector-1 234, and Sector-116 232. Most areas here are in the orange zone, but the situation remains concerning. Ghaziabad is facing even worse pollution levels, with Indirapuram at 324, Vasundhara 301, and Sanjay Nagar 251, keeping Indirapuram and Vasundhara in the red zone.

The meteorological department forecasts a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 13 degrees Celsius on February 17, with expectations of a maximum of 27 and a minimum of 14 degrees on February 18. Light rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, along with winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, is likely in the morning of February 18, with light rain possible in the afternoon as well.

Temperatures are expected to remain around 27/13 degrees on February 19, and 28/13 degrees on February 20 and 21. Clear weather and fog conditions are anticipated from February 19 to 21. The meteorological department states that the rain and strong winds on February 18 will help reduce the levels of accumulated pollutants, potentially improving the AQI.
