Manipal Hospitals Launches BE FAST Initiative for Stroke Awareness
Manipal Hospitals promoted the BE FAST initiative for stroke detection during an event in Kolkata, urging quick identification of symptoms.

KOLKATA, Nov 3: Manipal Hospitals conducted a stroke awareness program in Kolkata on October 29, 2026, coinciding with World Stroke Day. The initiative aimed to educate the public on recognizing stroke symptoms and the importance of immediate medical intervention.
Experts including Dr. Jayanta Roy, Director of Neurology at Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur, and Dr. Amlan Mandal, Head of Neurology at EM Bypass, emphasized the BE FAST approach, which stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time. Each component helps identify symptoms that could indicate a stroke, such as sudden loss of balance or facial drooping.
Dr. Roy stated that stroke is a medical emergency where “every minute matters.” He reiterated that quick recognition and assessment can significantly reduce brain damage. Dr. Mandal added that strokes can occur in younger individuals as well, making awareness crucial across all age groups.
The specialists pointed out transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) as warning strokes that require urgent medical evaluation. TIAs can mimic stroke symptoms but may resolve quickly, leading to delayed treatment.
During the program, Dr. Sukalyan Purkayastha addressed the importance of managing risk factors like hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Nirmalya Roy noted that approximately 20 million brain cells can be lost every minute during a major stroke, emphasizing the critical nature of timely treatment.
The BE FAST initiative aims to reduce the incidence of strokes through public education on recognizing symptoms and seeking help without delay. Awareness of other stroke risk factors, including lifestyle habits, was also part of the discussion.
