Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 38, ending a career that spanned 14 years. The all-rounder last played for Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against Oman.

Maxwell represented Australia in 149 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 130 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and seven Test matches. He retired from ODIs in June 2025 and leaves the T20 scene after being overlooked for a series against England.

During his international career, Maxwell won two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2015 and 2023, as well as one ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021. He scored 3,990 runs in ODIs at a strike rate of 126.7 and 2,897 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 154.4. His performance included ten international centuries and 136 wickets.

“A little bit sad and a little bit inevitable too, but I’m announcing my retirement from international cricket,” Maxwell said on a podcast.

Maxwell was recognized for his explosive batting, particularly during a memorable double century against Afghanistan during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which highlighted his abilities as one of Australia’s top all-rounders.

He also mentioned that conversations around his retirement had been ongoing, suggesting a mutual understanding with selectors regarding the future direction of the team. After retiring from international play, Maxwell will continue to participate in domestic cricket, aiming for a title with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, with whom he is contracted until 2028.

“I’m grateful for the time I was able to play for my country,” Maxwell expressed, reflecting on his career.

As he steps away from the international stage, Maxwell leaves behind a legacy as one of Australia’s remarkable cricketers, praised for his dynamic batting style and significant contributions in various World Cups.
