According to police, the accident is suspected to have occurred after the bus driver dozed off. The incident took place at around 2:30 am near a rest area in the Kolwa police station area on the expressway.

Soon after the bus plunged into the ditch, a fire broke out in its rear portion, triggering panic among passengers. People present at the spot said that most of the passengers were asleep at the time of the accident. The impact of the collision was so severe that passengers sleeping on the upper berths fell down, and several people suffered serious injuries.

After receiving information about the accident, Kolwa police, ambulances and rescue teams reached the spot. With the help of local residents, the injured passengers trapped inside the bus were rescued and shifted to the district hospital by ambulance. Most of the passengers were evacuated safely in time.

Several seriously injured passengers were later referred to medical centres after primary treatment. Women and children are also reported to be among the injured. Of the eight fatalities, six passengers reportedly died due to burn injuries caused by the fire, while two passengers died after sustaining head injuries.
