Mumbai, 1 January. Bollywood actress Yami Gautam is currently celebrating the success of her recently released film ‘Haq’. In an interaction, Yami reminisced about her early days in theatre and shared a funny incident about how she delivered a dialogue in a way that made everyone laugh uncontrollably.
Yami said, “When I was learning theatre in school, a new teacher had joined. Theatre was just starting, and each student had to deliver their lines in different styles. I remember one of my dialogues was, ‘Chup raho, chhote shaitaan, warna main tumhara gala kaat doongi’ (Stay silent, little devil, or I will cut your throat). I delivered it in such a strange way that everyone burst out laughing.”
She added, “After that, the teacher jokingly told me, ‘You speak like someone from the streets.’ I replied, ‘I don’t know how to do it, but at least you remember my lines.’”
Yami also spoke about the relationship between an actor and director. She explained, “The director sets the direction of the story, and the actor brings that vision to the screen. One character can be played by an actor in many different ways, and none of these ways are right or wrong. But what appears on screen is always part of the director’s vision. This shows the creative partnership between the actor and the director.”
She further said, “Acting is not just about delivering dialogues. It’s about understanding the emotions, mindset, and story direction of the character. When the director guides properly, the actor uses their experience and talent to make the story more impactful. The harmony between the director and the actor is what makes a film successful.”
