Guwahati, January 7, 2025 – Rescue efforts at the coal mine in Umarangsu, Assam, faced a major setback on the first day as adverse weather and rising water levels forced authorities to temporarily halt operations around 6 PM on Tuesday. The rescue mission will resume early Wednesday morning, officials confirmed.
Coal Mine Accident: 12 Workers Still Trapped
The accident occurred on Monday, January 6, at the ‘3 Kilo’ coal mine in the Umarangsu region, where sudden flooding trapped numerous workers inside. Although 10 workers were successfully rescued, the fate of at least 12 others remains uncertain. Officials are yet to confirm the exact number of miners trapped inside.
According to preliminary reports, the flooding was caused by the rupture of an underground water source, leaving little time for the miners to escape. Despite swift action by the authorities, rescue operations have been hindered by persistent rainfall and rising water levels in the mine.
Challenges Facing the Rescue Mission
A specially equipped Indian Navy team, which arrived at the site earlier, had to retreat temporarily due to worsening conditions inside the mine. The rising water level and heavy rains have complicated rescue efforts, delaying progress.
Speaking to the press, Mayank Kumar Jha, Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, said, “We are still unable to confirm the exact number of trapped workers. The rescue operation is facing significant challenges due to natural obstacles, but we are taking all possible steps to ensure the safety of the miners.”
High-Level Discussions Between State and Central Authorities
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed the situation with Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy. The Chief Minister assured the public that both state and central governments are working in close coordination to expedite the rescue efforts.
Taking to social media, CM Sarma stated, “Every resource is being mobilized to ensure the safety of those trapped. We are working tirelessly to bring them out.”
Crackdown on Illegal Mining Activities
In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining operations. The police raided an illegal coal mine near Umarangsu and arrested a suspect named Suraj Nunisa, who has allegedly been involved in unauthorized mining activities for a long time.
The administration has promised strict action against illegal mining, which is believed to be a recurring issue in the region.
Specialized Teams and Equipment Deployed
A 12-member Indian Navy team from Visakhapatnam, comprising expert divers, is spearheading the rescue operation. The team is equipped with advanced diving gear and other specialized equipment required for high-risk underwater rescues. Efforts are underway to control the water level inside the mine to facilitate the safe evacuation of trapped workers.
Additionally, the administration has received support from Oil India, which has dispatched a high-capacity water pump to help drain the mine. Coal India’s rescue team will also join the mission on Wednesday, bringing additional pumps and resources to speed up the operation.
Rescue Efforts to Intensify
The Chief Minister assured that every possible measure is being taken to accelerate the rescue operation. With better weather expected on Wednesday, officials are hopeful of making significant progress.
“Our priority remains the safety of the trapped workers. We are working closely with Coal India and Oil India to provide additional equipment, including high-power pumps, to drain the water from the mine,” CM Sarma said.
