Tom Latham Sees NZ T20 League Boosting Cricket Standards

Wellington, December 10: New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham expressed confidence that the proposed ‘New Zealand20’ league could significantly enhance the standard of cricket in the country. He noted that the league would provide young cricketers with better opportunities to showcase their talent.

Ahead of the second Test against West Indies in Wellington, Latham said, “‘New Zealand20’ league is a great initiative. I think we are one of the few Test-playing nations without a franchise competition. If the league starts, New Zealand cricket will benefit. Our cricket standard is already good, but with league cricket attracting international players, the level will rise even further.”

Latham added, “I hope the league will begin soon. I want that to happen. Franchise cricket has helped players from around the world to mix and learn from each other. Even after retiring from top international cricket, players continue to participate in franchise leagues. Learning from such players will be very beneficial not only for New Zealand’s current cricketers but also for the young generation coming up in the country.”

He further said, “I would like to see a competition here where we can make the best use of all our talents to promote cricket in New Zealand. I believe this is a truly good opportunity to do so.”

Following the global success of league cricket, New Zealand has planned to start a T20 league. The men’s league is expected to launch in January 2027, followed by a women’s league later that year. Former captain and coach Stephen Fleming, who has been involved in many T20 leagues, has played a key role in this initiative. The plan has yet to receive official approval from New Zealand Cricket. If the ‘New Zealand20’ league begins, it will replace the existing domestic T20 tournament, Super Smash.
