AAP Leader Questions Punjabs Special Intensive Revision Process

Chandigarh, May 17: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Punjab is set to commence on June 25, as announced by the Election Commission. This announcement has raised concerns from Aam Aadmi Party leader and MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib, Malwinder Singh Kang.

In a post on the social media platform X, Kang urged the people of Punjab to be vigilant, questioning the urgency of implementing the SIR just before the 2027 elections. He highlighted alarming statistics from Bihar, where over 6.5 million genuine names were removed from the voter list, and West Bengal, where 9.1 million names were cut, amounting to nearly 12% of the total voter list. Kang expressed his belief that the same tactics are now being directed at Punjab.

He pointed out the discrepancy in the scheduling of elections, noting that while Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are set to vote around the same time, Uttar Pradesh is placed in the first phase while Punjab is relegated to the third phase, which has stricter deadlines.

Kang called for unity among all political parties in Punjab, tagging the Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Bahujan Samaj Party in his plea. He urged them to set aside their differences and ensure that every genuine Punjabi voter’s name remains on the list.

He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the voices of farmers, youth, and families in Punjab, asserting, “We will fight. Punjab Zindabad!”

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab, Anindita Mitra, stated on May 14 that the SIR process would be conducted transparently, and all preparations have been finalized. She also reminded voters that retaining dual votes is a crime under the Indian Constitution, punishable by up to one year in prison, urging full cooperation with the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) during this process.
