New York, July 17: FIFA has announced that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will officiate the final match of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held at the New Jersey Stadium between Argentina and Spain. This appointment highlights Vinčić’s extensive experience and qualifications, as expressed by FIFA’s chief referee Pierluigi Collina.
Vinčić will be supported by assistant referees Tomaž Klancnik and Andraž Kovačič, with Adham Makhadmeh serving as the fourth official and Mohammad Alkalaf as the reserve assistant referee. At 46 years old, this will be Vinčić’s first major World Cup final. He began his World Cup career during the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he officiated two matches. By the time of the final, he will have refereed six matches in total during the World Cup.
His career includes officiating significant matches, including the UEFA Champions League Final in 2024 between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, as well as various tournaments like the UEFA European Championship, World Cup qualifiers, Europa League, Nations League, and Club World Cup.
The final is expected to attract over 80,000 spectators at the New Jersey Stadium. Under the captaincy of Lionel Messi, Argentina has reached the final for the second consecutive time, while Spain is making its first appearance in the final since 2010. Spain won the World Cup title in 2010, and they will be aiming for their second championship, while Argentina seeks to claim the trophy for the fourth time, having previously won in 1978, 1986, and 2022. The two teams have faced each other only once in a World Cup, with Argentina winning 2-1 in the 1966 tournament.
