Kolkata, June 2 — A devastating landslide struck an Indian Army camp in North Sikkim’s Lachen district on Sunday night, claiming the lives of three personnel and leaving six others missing, officials confirmed on Monday. Triggered by heavy rainfall, the landslide hit the camp at Chetan around 7 PM, causing extensive damage and panic.
Immediate Rescue Operation Underway
According to Wing Commander Himanshu Tiwari, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Eastern Command, rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after the disaster. Despite treacherous terrain and severe weather conditions, the Army has been conducting round-the-clock search missions to locate the missing personnel.
Four soldiers were rescued with minor injuries, while three bodies have been recovered so far. The deceased have been identified as:

Lance Naik Manish Thakur
Porter Abhishek Lakda
Efforts are ongoing to trace the six missing soldiers as Army search and rescue teams brave harsh conditions to comb through the landslide-hit area.

In an official statement, the Indian Army paid tribute to the fallen heroes and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families. The statement also emphasized that the Army is providing all possible assistance to the affected families during this time of grief.
“Despite the natural calamity, the Indian Army remains resolute in its commitment to safeguard every soldier’s life and well-being,” the statement read.
