New Delhi, June 19: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed shock and dismay over the alleged misappropriation of millions in donations for the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya. He described this as a severe betrayal of the faith and trust of millions of Hindus.
In an exclusive interview with a news agency, Tharoor discussed various topics, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s extended tenure and the shifting allegiances of leaders from the Trinamool Congress. He condemned the alleged misuse of funds at the Ram Temple, calling it unacceptable and disgraceful.
“This is truly shocking. Temples are centers of faith. People visit them, pray to God, and make donations. When you put something in the donation box or offer it to God, it is meant for the temple. It is for a sacred purpose, and it should only be used for the temple,” Tharoor stated.
He further emphasized that discovering the embezzlement of not just lakhs but crores of rupees is a significant betrayal of trust and faith. Tharoor expressed deep concern over the scale of this deception against millions of Hindu devotees, lamenting the distress such fraud must have caused to those who entrusted their donations to the temple.
Recently, allegations surfaced regarding financial irregularities in the temple’s donations. Reports suggest that several employees responsible for handling funds and jewelry from devotees both domestic and international misappropriated these for personal gain, allegedly using the money to build lavish homes.
Tharoor also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the country, noting that his strong presence on the national stage has left a mark on various aspects of Indian life, society, and politics. He acknowledged Modi’s energy, vision, and oratory skills, stating that he is among the best speakers the country has seen. However, he reminded that Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi served longer as Prime Ministers, albeit in different contexts.
