The contest, which saw competitors running amongst and above the clouds for large stages of the race, was 56 kilometres long and featured a 4,100-metre run to the highest point on the island at 1,861 metres.

The men’s race saw eventual podium finishers Andre Jonsson of Sweden and Russia’s Dmitry Mityaev battle with Albon for the lead over the majority of the route.

Albon eventually managed to pull away and crossed the line after five hours, 47 minutes, 57 seconds, seven minutes in front of second-placed Jonsson and nine minutes ahead of Mityaev in third.

In the ladies’ event, Sweden’s Emile Forsberg had led for more than half the race before being overtaken by Debats in the final stages, with the Dutchwoman crossing with a time of 6:45:09.
