Dehradun, May 24 – Heavy overnight rainfall wreaked havoc in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, as more than 12 two-wheelers were swept away due to a sudden rise in water levels in a local stream near Vijaynagar in Agastyamuni, situated on the Kedarnath Yatra route.
The downpour began around 1:30 AM on Friday night, lasting for over 30 minutes, triggering flash floods in a seasonal stream (locally called gadhera) near the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway. Several scooters and motorcycles parked along the roadside were washed away by the powerful current, eventually being found near the banks of the Mandakini River.
No Loss of Life, Situation Under Control
Station House Officer Mahesh Singh Rawat confirmed the incident and reassured the public that no human casualties were reported. “Vehicles were carried away by the strong water flow, but thankfully no lives were lost. The situation is now under control,” he stated.
The incident serves as an early warning for the region as the monsoon season approaches, especially given the pilgrimage influx along the Kedarnath route. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to exercise caution, particularly when parking near rivers and streams.

The rainfall, though brief, highlighted the vulnerability of hilly areas to flash floods and waterlogging. With thousands of pilgrims and tourists making their way through the Char Dham Yatra, local administration and disaster response teams are on high alert for any future weather-induced incidents.
