Rohit Sharma Surpasses Sourav Ganguly to Become India’s Second-Highest ODI Run-Scorer as Opener
New Delhi, October 23 (Udaipur Kiran) — Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has overtaken former skipper Sourav Ganguly to become India’s second-highest run-scorer as an opener in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Among Indian players, only Sachin Tendulkar now stands ahead of him in this elite list.

As of Thursday, Rohit has scored 9,171 runs in 186 ODI innings as an opener, surpassing Ganguly, who accumulated 9,146 runs in 236 innings while opening for India. With this feat, Rohit has moved up to fifth place globally among the highest-scoring openers in ODI cricket.
At the top of the global list is Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 15,310 runs in 340 innings. He is followed by Sanath Jayasuriya with 12,740 runs in 383 innings, Chris Gayle with 10,179 runs in 274 innings, and Adam Gilchrist, who scored 9,200 runs in 259 innings.
Rohit is making a comeback to ODI cricket after a long gap, having last played in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. In the first match of the current India-Australia series, played in Perth, Rohit was dismissed for just 8 runs off 14 balls.
His last ODI century came on February 9, 2025, when he scored 119 runs against England in Cuttack. He followed it up with a solid 76-run knock in the Champions Trophy final.
Team India is currently playing a must-win encounter against Australia in Adelaide, having lost the series opener in Perth. To keep the series alive, India needs a victory in this crucial clash.
Adelaide has been a favorable venue for India historically — the team has played 15 ODIs here, winning nine, losing five, and with one match ending in a tie.
