Jaipur, May 8: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot launched a scathing attack on the state government following the death of two women due to complications after a cesarean operation at Kota’s New Medical Hospital. He alleged that Rajasthan’s healthcare system has completely collapsed.
In a strong statement, Gehlot remarked that the deaths of the two new mothers and the serious condition of four other women are not isolated incidents but rather a result of the continuously deteriorating public health system in the state.
He expressed that it seems as though Rajasthan has lost its direction entirely. The tragedy in Kota did not happen suddenly; it is a culmination of the state’s crumbling healthcare infrastructure.
Recalling previous incidents in government hospitals, the former Chief Minister accused the administration of failing to take action due to a lack of accountability for repeated failures. He mentioned the fire in the ICU of SMS Hospital and the deaths caused by contaminated cough syrup, stating that these issues have been suppressed, resulting in a complete loss of fear and sensitivity within the system.
Gehlot further claimed that major welfare schemes initiated during the previous Congress government have been weakened under the current administration. Programs like Chiranjeevi and RGHS have come to a standstill, while private hospitals are facing continuous strikes, leading to a breakdown of the entire healthcare system.
Targeting the government over the alleged procurement of substandard medicines, Gehlot stated that the deaths in Kota point to severe administrative negligence. He emphasized that the racket of purchasing inferior medicines under the guise of local procurement and the resulting deaths of innocent mothers is irrefutable evidence of administrative failure. The aim of our free medicine scheme was to save lives, but today, negligence is taking lives instead.
The former Chief Minister urged the government to move beyond mere paper investigations and ensure strict action against the guilty.
The incident at Kota’s New Medical Hospital has sparked political outrage across Rajasthan, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and a high-level inquiry into the deaths and alleged negligence in treatment.
