Why Are Banks Closed on October 19?

The holidays are associated with major Hindu festivals celebrated across different parts of India, including Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, Ayudha Puja, Durga Puja and Vijayadashami.

During Navratri, devotees worship different forms of Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is celebrated with great enthusiasm in states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Odisha. Festivities include decorated pandals, the installation of Durga idols and religious ceremonies.

Maha Ashtami is associated with special prayers and pushpanjali, while Maha Navami is marked by havan, Kanya Puja and other religious rituals.

Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, symbolises the victory of good over evil. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Rama defeated Ravana on this day, while Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura. In many parts of India, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are burnt to mark the occasion.

In southern India, Ayudha Puja involves the worship of tools, vehicles, machinery and equipment used in daily work. The festival is also considered a way of showing respect for work and professional skills.
