Orange Alert Issued for Six Tamil Nadu Districts Amid Northeast Monsoon
An orange alert has been issued for six districts in Tamil Nadu due to anticipated heavy rainfall from the northeast monsoon.
Chennai, October 17 (Udaipur Kiran) : An orange alert has been declared for six districts in Tamil Nadu as the northeast monsoon is expected to bring significant rainfall throughout the state. The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday, particularly in Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Viluppuram, Nilgiri, and Coimbatore.
The atmospheric disturbances triggered by the arrival of the monsoon are responsible for this wet weather. Forecasts indicate that Chennai and neighboring Chengalpattu, along with several other districts, may also experience heavy rainfall. Areas such as Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Tiruppur, Vellore, and Kallakurichi are among those expected to see significant rain during the day.
Heavy rainfall is also predicted for Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Salem, as well as in the delta regions including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and Thanjavur. The weather center has issued separate warnings for heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in Ramnathapuram, Ruchirappalli, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Karur, Perambalur, and Ariyalur.
While moderate rainfall and gusty winds are anticipated in other parts of the state, the warnings have been issued following widespread precipitation observed in various districts since the monsoon’s onset. The weather department expects that some areas will continue to experience rain into Sunday.
In Nilgiri, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on Sunday, marking two consecutive days of intense weather for the hilly district. Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Tiruppatur are also forecasted to receive substantial rainfall on Sunday, with the most intense precipitation expected on Saturday in Coimbatore, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur.
The two-day forecast suggests a varied rainfall pattern across Tamil Nadu, with the heaviest downpours concentrated in select districts while others may see moderate rainfall. Heavy rain is expected in Chennai on Saturday, with warnings of very heavy rainfall issued for Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram.
The weather department’s district-wise forecast highlights the uneven intensity of monsoon rains, although wet and windy conditions are anticipated across most of Tamil Nadu throughout the day, with further rainfall expected in many areas on Sunday.
