PIMS Hospital Doctors Close Heart Hole Without Open-Heart Surgery

Udaipur, November 8 (Udaipur Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Udaipur, have achieved a major medical milestone by successfully closing a heart defect without performing open-heart surgery.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal said that the team of cardiologists at the hospital treated a woman suffering from a congenital heart defect (Atrial Septal Defect – ASD) using a minimally invasive ASD device closure technique. The treatment was provided free of cost under the Chiranjeevi Yojana.

He explained that in normal cases, the passage between the two upper chambers of the heart closes naturally a few months after birth. However, in some cases, it remains open — a condition commonly referred to as a “hole in the heart.”

Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain, who led the procedure, said that patients suffering from ASD often experience breathlessness while walking or climbing stairs, dizziness, fatigue, and slower physical development compared to others.

Describing the procedure, Dr. Jain said, “In ASD device closure, a small umbrella-like device is used to seal the hole. The device, which has two discs connected by a central tube, is inserted into the heart through a narrow catheter and deployed precisely at the site of the defect.”

The procedure was performed by Dr. Mahesh Jain, with crucial support from Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat.

Agarwal added that this achievement demonstrates PIMS Hospital’s growing expertise in advanced cardiac care and reflects the institute’s commitment to making world-class treatment accessible and affordable for patients in southern Rajasthan.
