Odisha Crime Branch Arrests Two More in Mob Lynching Case

Bhubaneswar, May 19: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police has arrested two more suspects involved in the brutal mob lynching of Government Railway Police constable Soumya Ranjan Swain, which occurred on May 7 in the Balianta area of Bhubaneswar.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Crime Branch stated that based on solid evidence gathered during the investigation on May 19, the main accused, Panchanan Barjena alias Kalia, and Ranjit Rana were apprehended from the Ranpur forest in Nayagarh district. The investigation revealed their involvement in the attack on the deceased.

So far, a total of 15 individuals have been arrested in this case, including 11 who were previously detained by the Balianta police.

The Crime Branch has taken over the investigation of two cases registered at the Balianta police station. One case pertains to the mob lynching of Soumya Ranjan Swain, while the other is based on a complaint from a girl who alleged that the deceased attempted to sexually assault her.

On May 7, constable Soumya Ranjan Swain was beaten to death by a mob after being accused of attempting to sexually assault a girl in the Balianta area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

Soumya was traveling towards Bhubaneswar with his friend Om Prakash when their motorcycle collided with a scooter carrying two girls in the Binghapur-Kaja area. Following the collision, a dispute arose between the two parties.

One girl accused Soumya of attempting sexual assault, prompting local villagers to rush to the scene and attack both individuals. The police later rescued them and rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared Soumya dead.

In the aftermath of this incident, four police officers have been suspended, and the then-in-charge of the Balianta police station has been transferred for failing to take action during the mob attack.
