Sydney, October 8 (Udaipur Kiran): Ahead of the highly anticipated Ashes Series, the Australian Test team faces a major setback as skipper and pace spearhead Pat Cummins is likely to miss the series due to a stress injury in his back. Reports suggest the injury has not fully healed, putting his participation in serious doubt
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, recent scans revealed that although the 32-year-old has shown signs of recovery, he is not yet fit to resume bowling. As a result, Cummins is expected to miss the opening matches — and possibly the entire Ashes series, starting November 21 against England.
In Cummins’ absence, Steve Smith is the frontrunner to take over the captaincy. Cummins last played in the Test series against West Indies in July, which Australia won 3-0. Since then, he has been rested from the limited-overs series against South Africa and New Zealand, and will also miss the upcoming India tour.
Selectors are likely to bring in Scott Boland as a replacement, who could join Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as part of the pace attack.
Australia has held the Ashes trophy since 2018, while England has not won a Test match on Australian soil since 2011. This time, the English side will be eager to end their drought and reclaim the prestigious trophy.
