NASA Identifies Ancient Mars Meteorite Teghaza 001 Found in the Sahara
NASA scientists have dated the Teghaza 001 meteorite, revealing it is over 4 billion years old and provides insights into Mars' early crust.

MALI, Nov 2: NASA scientists have identified a meteorite named Teghaza 001, found in the Sahara Desert in 2022, as a piece of Mars that formed over 4.1 billion years ago. This discovery positions it among the oldest Martian meteorites ever found, as detailed in a recent study published in the journal Science.
Teghaza 001, weighing nearly two pounds (800 grams), is unique due to its distinct volcanic mineral composition and texture. Lead author Yang Liu from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory described the meteorite as a “Rosetta Stone for Mars,” emphasizing its importance in understanding the planet’s early geological history.
This meteorite is one of about 435 known to originate from Mars. Researchers verified its Martian origin by comparing its mineral and chemical characteristics with data from previous NASA missions. The latest study revealed that the meteorite experienced alteration by water approximately 4.1 billion years ago, suggesting complex interactions between water and rock on early Mars.
Co-author Lee Saper noted that Teghaza 001 provides a glimpse into a part of Mars previously unexplored, as it captures evidence of how the planet’s crust developed from cooling magma and was altered by water. The research also indicates a more dynamic early water cycle on Mars than previously believed.
The age-dating method used for Teghaza 001 was advanced and precise, allowing scientists to analyze individual mineral grains rather than larger samples. This innovative approach, developed by geochemistry professor Francois Tissot at Caltech, could enable similar studies on other Martian meteorites and celestial bodies.
Liu expressed anticipation among the scientific community for further research on Teghaza 001, which is expected to yield more insights into Mars’ history and atmospheric changes.
