Srinagar, 15 November (Udaipur Kiran). A powerful late-night explosion at the Naugam Police Station in Srinagar on Friday killed nine people, including a tehsildar, and left 29 others injured, most of them police personnel. The blast occurred around 11:22 pm, causing massive damage in the area.
The explosion was so intense that around 10 vehicles parked nearby caught fire, and body parts were found scattered up to 200 metres away. The injured have been admitted to 92 Base Army Hospital and SKIMS Soura, where they are undergoing treatment.
According to officials, the blast happened during the examination of seized explosives linked to a white-collar terror module case. Police were reportedly taking samples of the material when the explosion occurred. It is still unclear whether the entire 360 kg of seized explosive had been brought to the police station or only a portion.
The explosives had been recovered from a rented house in Faridabad linked to Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, who has already been arrested in the Delhi blast case.
Authorities are also probing the incident from a terror angle. Sources said explosives typically detonate only when a detonator, fuse, or triggering mechanism is used. Meanwhile, a Pakistan-backed group, PAFF (People’s Anti-Fascist Front), believed to be associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed, has claimed responsibility, though officials have not confirmed this claim.
A high-level investigation has been launched, and forensic teams are working to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.
