New Delhi, September 22 (Kiran News): A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking the removal of the graves of terrorists Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat from Tihar Jail. The plea has been submitted by an organisation named Vishwa Vedic Sanatan Sangh.
The petition argues that maintaining these graves inside the jail premises is “illegal and unconstitutional.” It further claims that the presence of these graves has allegedly turned Tihar into a site of radical pilgrimage, which is against the Delhi Prison Rules.
According to the plea, under the prison rules, the bodies of convicts sentenced to death should be disposed of in a manner that prevents any glorification of terrorism and ensures discipline within the jail. The petition also alleges that some people gather at these graves to offer prayers, which undermines prison security.
The petitioner has requested that the graves be removed from the jail premises. If shifting them is not possible, it has sought that the remains be moved to an undisclosed location to prevent any misuse of the site for extremist glorification.
Notably, Afzal Guru was executed in February 2013 for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack, while Maqbool Bhat, co-founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was hanged in February 1984 for anti-India terror activities.
