United Nations, September 22 (Udaipur Kiran) : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a significant meeting with leaders from the Visegrad-4 (V4) countries—Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic—marking a historic occasion aimed at strengthening India’s relations with these Central European nations. The meeting took place on September 22, 2026, at the United Nations.
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar characterized India as an “emerging superpower” and expressed the V4 nations’ support for India’s bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Blanar stated, “We all agree that India, as part of the Global South and an emerging superpower in the Indo-Pacific region, deserves a permanent seat in the UNSC.”
Jaishankar noted that the discussions led to an agreement on enhancing cooperation, particularly as India’s ties with the European Union continue to strengthen. He mentioned plans to establish an annual business forum with the V4 countries and confirmed that foreign ministers from these nations would meet each year.
The ministers also discussed increasing collaboration in technology and defense, areas where India and the V4 countries have a history of working together. Jaishankar emphasized the potential for further cooperation in technology and innovation, highlighting the strong industrial economies and talent in these nations.
The V4 group, named after the Hungarian city of Visegrad, was formed in 1991 to foster cooperation among its members as they transitioned away from Soviet influence. Initially comprising three countries, the group expanded to four after the split of Czechoslovakia. Jaishankar, who previously served in Hungary, also had a separate meeting with Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister Anita Orbán.
Post-meeting, Jaishankar shared on social media that they had decided to work together to strengthen their relations and advance the India-EU strategic partnership. He also held a bilateral meeting with Blanar to discuss their agenda and ways to enhance multilateral cooperation.
