Under Modi’s guidance, 2026 has been crucial for India in terms of economic strength, technological self-reliance, and increasing global influence. His visit to France and participation in global conferences like ‘India Innovates 2026’ have given India’s startups and tech ecosystem a new international identity.
In his 13th consecutive address from the Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi reiterated the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, emphasizing self-reliance, rapid growth, and the empowerment of youth and women. According to the government, India is among the fastest-growing major economies, with a GDP growth rate reaching approximately 7.4 percent.
Energy and self-reliance have also been key achievements of the government. India set a record for adding the highest solar energy capacity in a year, strengthening the country’s position in renewable energy.
There has been a surge in technology and innovation as well. The number of space startups in the country has reached around 400, with increased private participation in the space sector.
On the governance and policy reform front, a law regulating the authority of states to impose new taxes, cesses, or levies in the mineral sector was passed by Parliament, paving the way for a more uniform tax system for industries and investments.
In sports, India secured fourth place in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. The Prime Minister met with the victorious athletes to boost their morale.
On June 10, Modi set a new record for the longest continuous tenure as Prime Minister, serving for 4,399 days, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days. However, Nehru still holds the record for the most flag hoisting ceremonies at the Red Fort, with 17 instances.
Additionally, 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the creation of ‘Vande Mataram.’ For the first time, a special rendition of the song was performed during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, adding a new chapter to the history of India’s Independence Day celebrations.
