Miami, December 10 (Udaipur Kiran) – Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of Major League Soccer (MLS) for the second consecutive year. Messi earned this prestigious award on Tuesday following his outstanding performance in leading Inter Miami to the MLS title and finishing as the league’s top scorer.
The 38-year-old Messi became the first player to win back-to-back MLS MVP awards. He is only the second player in MLS history to win the MVP twice, a feat previously achieved solely by Preki, who won in 1997 and 2003.
This season, Messi scored 29 goals and provided 19 assists during the regular season, securing the MLS Golden Boot. He also became only the second player to lead the league in both goals and assists in the same regular season, after Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC accomplished this in 2015.
After extending his contract with Inter Miami for three years in October, Messi continued his excellent form into the MLS playoffs, scoring six goals and delivering nine assists. In the recent final, Inter Miami defeated Vancouver 3-1 to claim their first MLS Cup title. Messi contributed two crucial assists in the final and was also named the MLS Cup MVP.
This award adds to Messi’s already impressive trophy cabinet, which includes a record eight Ballon d’Or titles, three FIFA Men’s Best Player awards, two FIFA World Cup Golden Ball awards, three UEFA Men’s Player of the Year honors, six European Golden Shoes, six La Liga Best Player awards, and 15 Argentina Footballer of the Year titles.
