New Delhi, June 23: On the occasion of International Olympic Day, Jay Shah, the President of the International Cricket Council (ICC), expressed support for the global initiatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), highlighting the importance of using the power of sports to promote health, well-being, and active community participation.
International Olympic Day is celebrated annually on June 23, commemorating the establishment of the IOC in Paris in 1894, when Pierre de Coubertin called for the revival of the ancient Olympic Games.
This day is observed under the entire Olympic movement, where National Olympic Committees, international sports federations, and organizing committees of the Olympic Games provide opportunities for people worldwide to engage in sports activities.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Jay Shah stated, “On International Olympic Day, we fully support the IOC’s initiative to harness the power of sports to promote health, wellness, and community engagement.”
He emphasized that cricket has a unique ability to unite, inspire, and empower people, with over two billion fans. Cricket will make its return to the Olympic Games at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics after a long hiatus of 128 years, having previously been played only once in the 1900 Summer Olympics. The sport will be featured in the T20 format at Los Angeles 2028.
Shah extended his wishes for Olympic Day, expressing eagerness to celebrate the Olympic spirit that inspires us to move forward, play, and lead better lives.
Meanwhile, IOC President Kirsty Coventry, in a video message released for Olympic Day, urged people worldwide to “take the first step” and adopt an active lifestyle. Her message supports this year’s “Let’s Move” campaign theme, “You Can Do This,” aimed at encouraging youth to transform self-doubt into confidence through sports and physical activities.
The celebration of Olympic Day began in 1947 when IOC member Dr. Gruss proposed the idea during the 41st IOC session. The proposal was later approved in January 1948 at the 42nd IOC session, assigning the responsibility of organizing the event to National Olympic Committees.
Since then, this day has been celebrated as a significant moment in the history of the Olympic movement and a celebration of the universal values of sports.
