New Delhi, March 5: India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in the capital to express his condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He met with Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fathali to convey his sympathies.
Just a day prior, the Iranian Embassy announced that it would open a condolence book for people to express their grief following Khamenei’s ‘martyrdom.’ India has previously urged both sides to exercise restraint.
During his visit to the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, Misri signed the tribute book and expressed his condolences on behalf of India. In response to the profound loss felt by the Iranian people and their supporters worldwide, the embassy has invited Indian citizens, diplomats, and anyone wishing to show sympathy to sign the condolence book. The book will be open for signatures on Thursday (March 5), Friday (March 6), and Monday (March 9).
Khamenei, aged 86, died on February 28 due to a joint military attack by Israel and the United States. Following the attack, the U.S. claimed that several high-ranking military officials were also killed during a military meeting, including Iran’s Defense Minister and the head of the IRGC.
Reports indicate that several of Khamenei’s close relatives were also killed in the attack, including his daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandson. His wife, who was injured in the attack, later died during treatment.
Since the Supreme Leader’s death, the situation in the Middle East has escalated. Tehran has targeted several Gulf countries and U.S. bases in retaliation. On Thursday, two drone attacks were launched against Azerbaijan, which borders Iran, prompting the summoning of the Iranian ambassador. Baku reported that the attacks targeted an airport and a school, injuring two individuals.
Khamenei had been the Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989. Iranian state media confirmed his death and announced a 40-day national mourning period. The event has elicited mixed reactions globally, with Egypt’s response particularly drawing attention. A crowd gathered at the Iranian Embassy in Cairo to mourn Khamenei’s passing.
