Pressure on Abhishek Sharma Should Ease, Says Atul Vasan

Mumbai, March 5: The second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 between India and England is set to take place on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The winning team will face New Zealand in the final on March 8. Ahead of the crucial match, former Indian cricketer Atul Vasan shared his insights on the players from both teams.

25-year-old Indian opener Abhishek Sharma struggled in the initial three matches of the tournament without scoring. However, he managed to score 15 runs against South Africa, 55 runs against Zimbabwe, and 10 runs against the West Indies.

Vasan believes that the pressure on Sharma should be reduced to allow him to play naturally. He stated, “Abhishek Sharma does not need to change his aggressive style. The pressure on him should be lessened so he can showcase his natural game. Having Axar Patel in the lower order provides the team with a safety net.”

India faced a setback against South Africa, losing by 76 runs in the Super-8 match. However, the team bounced back, defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs and the West Indies by 5 wickets to secure a place in the semi-finals. Vasan views the loss to South Africa as a “hidden blessing” for the Indian team, as it prepared them for the pressures of big matches.

Regarding the England team, Vasan commented, “The England squad appears well-balanced. Will Jacks is an emerging star who has performed brilliantly in the tournament. Comparatively, England’s spin department (Richard Dawson, Will Jacks, and Adil Rashid) seems more effective than the Indian attack. The performance of openers like Jos Buttler and Phil Salt will be crucial for England. The matchup between Jofra Archer and Sanju Samson will be interesting.”

Vasan considers Jasprit Bumrah to be the “bank” of the Indian team, stating that if Bumrah can break the initial partnerships, victory could be easier for India.

The match is scheduled for Thursday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Vasan noted, “Wankhede Stadium is small, and dew will play a significant role. The team winning the toss will likely prefer to bowl first.”

Sanju Samson played a pivotal role in India’s victory against the West Indies in the decisive Super-8 match, scoring an unbeaten 97 runs. Vasan praised his performance, calling it a positive sign for the team.
