New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that during India’s presidency of BRICS in 2026, the nation will work towards placing the Global South at the center of a secure, resilient, equitable, and sustainable global energy future.
Sharing an article by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the social media platform X, Modi emphasized that a robust energy system is built not only through effective domestic policies but also through strong international partnerships.
In his article, Khattar highlighted that India aims to keep the Global South at the forefront of a secure, flexible, equitable, and sustainable global energy future during its BRICS presidency. He also noted that effective domestic policies and better cooperation among countries are essential for a strong energy system.
Khattar pointed out that the global energy sector is rapidly evolving, making mutual cooperation and innovation crucial for developing countries to maintain economic growth, energy security, and environmental balance.
He stated that India will strive to translate this shared vision into concrete outcomes during its BRICS presidency, enhancing cooperation among emerging economies in areas such as energy availability, clean energy transition, new technologies, and innovation.
Khattar mentioned that India has made significant progress in increasing electricity access, expanding non-fossil fuel-based power capacity, and promoting renewable energy. He noted that India has already achieved over 50% of its total installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.
To strengthen energy security, India is undertaking several key initiatives, including coal gasification, green hydrogen, electric mobility, and the expansion of electricity transmission networks. He also highlighted the role of digital technologies like smart meters and the India Energy Stack in modernizing the country’s power sector.
Khattar further stated that the diverse strengths of BRICS countries complement each other. If these nations work together, they can develop a secure, robust, and sustainable energy system. He emphasized that through strong international partnerships, BRICS countries can advance the interests of the Global South and develop long-term solutions in the energy sector.
