London, June 27: Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), emphasized the urgent need to accelerate electrification to enhance energy security and drive economic growth. Speaking at the first Adani Green Energy Dialogue, organized in partnership with the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) during London Climate Action Week at the Science Museum, he stated that renewable energy linked with energy storage is crucial for providing reliable, affordable, and clean electricity around the clock in the future.
Adani pointed out that energy security, affordability, and sustainability are among the biggest challenges facing the world today. He remarked, “Electrification is emerging as the most effective solution to address these three challenges. For countries aiming for strong economic growth and energy self-reliance, rapid electrification is no longer an option but a necessity.”
He highlighted that the true potential of renewable energy is realized when it is integrated with energy storage technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSP). “These technologies provide reliable, affordable, and round-the-clock access to clean energy. Adani Green is advancing this vision and is working towards achieving 50 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The world’s largest renewable energy plant is being developed in Khavda, Gujarat, where clean energy is being integrated with large-scale energy storage,” he added.
The dialogue included policymakers, investors, industry representatives, and climate experts, who discussed the necessary policies, investments, and infrastructure required to accelerate the clean energy transition.
The event, part of one of the world’s largest independent climate gatherings, underscored the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change, promoting new policies, and mobilizing investments for energy transitions.
Lord Adair Turner, Co-Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission, stated that for the world to achieve a zero-emission economy and control global warming, the most critical step is clean electrification. He emphasized the need to make the economy as electricity-based as possible and maximize carbon-free electricity generation.
He noted, “The good news is that electrification is already proving economically beneficial in many sectors, such as road transport, building heating, and low-temperature industrial processes. New technologies are also making it possible to electrify high-temperature processes in heavy industries.”
Nigel Topping, Co-Founder of Ambition Loop and Chair of the UK Climate Change Committee, mentioned that while investment in carbon-free electricity generation is increasing, real economic and environmental benefits will only be realized when electrification extends to sectors still reliant on fossil fuels.
He added, “A clear understanding of how the decreasing costs of technology and flexibility in modern power grids work is crucial to attract significant investments.”
The Adani Group has committed to investing over $100 billion in energy transition and related infrastructure, making it one of the largest private investments in this sector globally. The group is also continuously investing in power transmission, energy storage, green hydrogen, digital infrastructure, and new industrial technologies to accelerate the shift towards a low-carbon economy.
Earlier this week, during the Adani Group’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Chairman Gautam Adani reiterated the commitment to developing a diverse energy portfolio based on renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy storage, transmission, digital infrastructure, and nuclear energy to meet India’s growing energy needs.
He also announced plans to develop up to 10 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity under the group’s diverse energy portfolio, stating that nuclear energy, along with renewable energy and energy storage, will play a significant role in providing large-scale, reliable, affordable, and low-carbon electricity.
