Caracas, June 28: Venezuela’s earthquake research institute, Funvisis, reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake felt in the central part of the country on Saturday. This tremor occurred as residents were still shaken by two significant and destructive earthquakes earlier in the week.
According to the institute, the epicenter of the new quake was located about 35 kilometers west of La Guaira, a major port city in the central coastal region. Following the powerful quakes on Wednesday, La Guaira had already been declared a disaster-affected area due to extensive damage.
Officials noted that Saturday’s earthquake struck just five kilometers below the surface. Shallow earthquakes often feel more intense and pose a greater risk of damage to buildings. Residents in Caracas and surrounding areas also felt the tremors, prompting many to evacuate buildings out of fear of further damage or collapse.
This latest quake comes just days after the two major earthquakes that caused widespread devastation, including building collapses, landslides, and fatalities. Rescue teams are currently engaged in relief efforts, attempting to reach those stranded in coastal and mountainous regions.
Funvisis stated that while Saturday’s earthquake was not large, its shallow depth and the pre-existing vulnerabilities of structures have raised concerns. Experts indicate that aftershocks are common following significant earthquakes and can further damage weakened infrastructures.
Local authorities have urged residents in at-risk areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols. Emergency services have been put on high alert, with teams inspecting critical facilities such as hospitals, bridges, and power systems.
In light of the severity of the situation, the government has also appealed for international assistance. Earthquake specialists are continuously monitoring the situation, and Funvisis has advised the public to rely solely on official information and refrain from spreading rumors that could incite panic.
