How Pregnant Women Can Stay Healthy During Winter

New Delhi, January 5 – Cold winds, reduced sunlight, and changing temperatures during winter have a direct impact on the body. For most people, this season brings a feeling of lethargy and tiredness, but for pregnant women, extra caution is necessary. Pregnancy causes many hormonal and physical changes in the body, weakening the immune system. This makes pregnant women more vulnerable to cold, cough, joint pain, and fatigue during winter.

Both Ayurveda and modern science agree that with the right routine, diet, and care, pregnant women can keep themselves and their babies safe throughout the winter season.

According to Ayurveda, the winter season increases the ‘Vata’ dosha, causing dryness, pain, and chills in the body. Keeping the body warm helps balance ‘Vata’ and provides comfort. Scientifically, the body consumes more energy in cold weather, which can increase tiredness. Therefore, wearing warm and comfortable woolen clothes is essential. Covering the head and feet prevents body heat from escaping. Sitting in sunlight for some time during the day is an easy way to get vitamin D, which is vital for the mother’s bones and the baby’s development.

Although thirst decreases in winter, water intake remains crucial. Ayurveda suggests drinking lukewarm water to aid digestion and eliminate toxins. Science also supports drinking sufficient water to reduce risks of constipation, fatigue, and urinary infections, which are common during pregnancy. Lukewarm water, soups, and mild herbal teas help keep the body warm from inside and improve blood circulation, ensuring proper nutrition reaches the baby.

Sudden changes between cold and warm environments can harm pregnant women. Ayurveda considers this harmful because it disrupts the body’s natural balance. Science explains that abrupt temperature changes do not allow the body time to adjust, leading to colds, fever, or weakness. If going outside, spending a few minutes near an open door or balcony first helps the body gradually adapt to the weather.

Diet plays a crucial role in strengthening pregnant women during winter. Ayurveda recommends nutritious and mildly warm foods that provide energy. Seasonal vegetables like carrots, beetroots, spinach, and sweet potatoes help increase blood levels and provide essential nutrients for the baby’s growth. Modern science recognizes these foods as rich in iron, fiber, and antioxidants, which strengthen the mother’s immune system.
