Understanding TB Risks: Who Should Be Concerned?

New Delhi, June 7: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading infectious diseases in the country, primarily affecting the lungs. Health experts emphasize that certain individuals are at a higher risk of contracting TB compared to the general population. These individuals must take special precautions and undergo regular screenings to ensure early detection and treatment of the disease.

According to the National Health Mission (NHM), specific groups face a significantly greater risk of TB infection. It is crucial for these individuals to be vigilant and get screened periodically to catch the disease in its early stages. TB is a fully curable disease, but early identification is essential.

Individuals at higher risk include:
Contacts of TB Patients: Those living with or around someone diagnosed with TB are at an increased risk of infection.
Malnourished Individuals: Poor immunity and nutrient deficiencies make it easier for TB to spread among this group.
Former TB Patients: Individuals who have recovered from TB in the past may experience a recurrence of the disease.
People Living with HIV: A weakened immune system makes TB particularly dangerous for those affected by HIV.
Diabetics: Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can elevate the risk of TB.
Individuals Over 60: Aging can weaken the immune system, increasing susceptibility to TB.
Long-term Smokers or Alcohol Users: Smoking damages the lungs, while excessive alcohol consumption harms both the liver and immune system.
Residents of Crowded Areas or Slums: Poor hygiene and living conditions in places like prisons, orphanages, and slums heighten the risk of TB infection.

The NHM advises those in the aforementioned groups to remain alert. Symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss, night sweats, and fatigue should prompt immediate consultation with a doctor.

To prevent TB, individuals are encouraged to undergo regular health check-ups, maintain a nutritious diet, avoid smoking and alcohol, and follow medical advice if they come into contact with TB patients. Emphasizing cleanliness is also crucial in reducing the risk of infection.
