House of the Dragon S2E4: Shocking Deaths & A Divided Kingdom

House of the Dragon Season 2

In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, Aegon falls from the sky after a fierce battle between dragons, leaving many wondering if the usurper is dead. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)

At the end of the three-way fight between Vaygar, Sunfire, and Mereis in Season 2, Episode 4 of House of the Dragon, Kristen Cole finds Agan’s crumpled body next to a fallen dragon.

There’s no doubt that Rhaenys is dead, but we don’t really see what happens to King Targaryen. Therefore, it is difficult for those who do not read the books to know whether his reign will end badly.

Here’s everything you need to know about Aegon’s attack at the Battle of Rook’s Rest and what happened to his dragon Sunfire.

Did Aegon die at the end of episode 4?

No, Aegon is not dead. However, he is seriously injured and will spend the rest of his days in pain and misery after the Battle of Rook’s Rest.

Aegon may look dead (thanks to the fact that he was caught in a fireball), but he survives the battle with the dragon.

Rhaenys and Marae were the only major casualties of the battle (aside from the hundreds of soldiers killed in Rook’s resting place), and the king miraculously survived, but barely.

During the aerial duel, Aemond appears on Vagar and interrupts the battle between Mereis and Sunfire. He orders Vagal to go to Dragonfire, but makes no attempt to escape his brother. Therefore, Aegon bears the brunt of the attack and Sunfire falls, taking him with her.

Kristen Cole sees the attack and rushes towards the fallen king. When they reached the forest, Sunfire’s injured body (missing most of his wings) and Egan fell to the ground next to him.

What will happen to Egon?

In Fire and Blood, Aegon lived a miserable and painful life after the battle, surviving with many broken bones and severe burns all over his body.

He suffered a broken hip, cuts and skin burns. He was escorted to King’s Landing, but his recovery took a year. During this time, he frequently drank poppy milk, which clouded his mind.

He often slept without leaving bed and prayed for his death while awake. He didn’t allow anyone except his mother Aristo and Kristen Cole to see him.

During the rest period, Prince Aemond assumed the king’s duties as Prince Regent and Guardian of the Kingdom. Although Aegon recovered somewhat, he remained disfigured and scarred by his burns for the rest of his life.

What happens to Sunfire?

Sunfire and Aegon were injured, and Meris was injured in the neck and her wing was half severed from her body.

Aegon was returned to King’s Landing, but Sunfire was unable to travel. He stayed near Luke’s retreat to heal and was guarded near him at the behest of Kristen Cole.

Sunfire survived by eating the corpses of soldiers killed during the battle and eating calves and sheep after the battle. Sunfire only gained the strength to face Maidenpool when the Lord of Maidenpool, Wallis Mouton, attempted to retake Rook’s Resort with his men and slay the dragon.

Shortly after the attack, Sunfire disappeared and was able to fly again. After the fall of King’s Landing in 130 AD, the dragon reunited with Agan at Dragonstone.
