Chennai, October 23 (Udaipur Kiran): The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Chennai has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh over the next 24 hours. The alert follows the formation of a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which has now intensified and is moving towards the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

According to the RMC, the system initially formed as a low-pressure area, later developed into a depression, and has now strengthened into a deep depression. Earlier predictions suggested the possibility of a cyclone, but due to its close proximity to land, the system lost structural strength and could not evolve into a full-fledged cyclone.
As the system approaches the coast, the rainfall pattern has shifted, leading to widespread showers across coastal and northern Tamil Nadu.
Rainfall Forecast and Alerts
The RMC has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in several areas, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds. A special alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet districts, where heavy downpours are expected at isolated places.
Meteorologists indicated that after making landfall, the deep depression is likely to move inland, weaken slightly, and then recurve towards the sea around Sunday, potentially reactivating over water and triggering another round of rainfall early next week.
Government Preparations
In view of the heavy rain warning, the Tamil Nadu government has ramped up preparedness measures. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has deployed over 24,000 personnel for relief and rescue operations. Authorities have set up 215 relief camps and started 106 community kitchens to assist affected residents.
Control rooms and helplines have also been activated to coordinate flood relief efforts and address public grievances. Officials have urged residents in low-lying and coastal areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow all safety advisories issued by local authorities.
