Google Confirms Passcode Management and More Features Coming to Smart Lock Despite Discontinued Production

Despite recently announcing the end of production for the Nest x Yale Lock, Google is reaffirming its commitment to supporting existing users with enhanced features coming soon to the Google Home app.
More Controls Coming to Google Home App
In a recent update tied to its device portfolio changes, Google confirmed that new controls, including passcode management, will be added to the Google Home app “later this year.” The move is part of Google’s continued migration away from the legacy Nest app as it consolidates smart home management into one unified platform.
The Nest x Yale Lock, first released in 2018 as a collaboration between Google and Yale, has long relied on the Nest app for full functionality. While basic controls like locking/unlocking, renaming the device, adjusting lock tone volume, and enabling one-touch locking are already available in the Home app, several key features remain exclusive to the Nest app, such as:

Passcode Management & More Expected Soon
In an official FAQ, Google confirmed that passcode management will be one of the first major updates arriving in the Home app. This will allow users to create, edit, and delete access codes directly in Google Home for the first time—a long-requested feature among Nest x Yale Lock owners.
Though no exact timeline was provided beyond “later this year,” the company’s renewed attention to the lock suggests that other long-missing features like lock history and guest access management could also follow.
Support Continues Despite End of Production
Google recently announced that it is no longer manufacturing new units of the Nest x Yale Lock or Nest Protect. However, existing users can continue to use and manage their devices via the Nest or Google Home apps. The lock, which originally retailed for $279+, remains in use across thousands of homes, and the expanded app support will help prolong its utility even as hardware production ceases.
