Google Chrome for Android Reportedly Adds Support for Third-Party Password Managers

Google Chrome for Android appears to be adding support for third-party password management. The browser currently only supports autocomplete passwords through its main service, Google Password Manager. As a result, Android users who prefer other password managers are unable to log in to their accounts in the browser using the app’s saved data. Now it seems that the tech giant is solving this problem by allowing users to choose the third-party services they want. Notably, the Google Chrome desktop app recently updated the standard version of its Safe Browsing feature with real-time protection protocols.

Discovered by consultant @Leopeva64 in the stable version of Android Chrome X (ex-Twitter), this feature allows users to complete passwords from their favorite password manager. “This feature is currently working and Chrome will no longer show suggestions from your password manager after you select ‘Use a different provider,'” he said. Tipsters first highlighted the feature in November 2023, when it was still in development.

The feature is currently available in Chrome Stable, Beta and Canary builds and users using these builds will have immediate access. However, you must first enable the test flag. According to a report from Android Authority, it can be enabled at chrome://flags/#enable-autofill-virtual-view-struction. After activation, the settings will be displayed. Users can then go to Chrome Settings > Autocomplete Options and choose to use a different provider. If you change your settings, Google will no longer show password suggestions in the sign-in text field.

This setting automatically prompts Chrome to enable the default password manager you set up on your Android phone. To change the default password manager, users can go to Android Settings, click Passwords & Accounts > Passwords, Passkeys & Data Services and select the password manager of their choice.

It is important to note that while this feature was working, a bug was reported where when entering a new password, the option to save the password was not displayed even if the flag was enabled. This was discovered. This can be a problem for users who want to quickly change password management. It appears that Google is still refining this feature before its release.
