Finland Tops the List as the Happiest Country in the World

Washington, March 20 – Finland has once again emerged as the happiest country in the world, according to the World Happiness Report 2025 published by Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre. This marks Finland’s eighth consecutive year at the top of the list. Other Nordic nations, including Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, have also secured spots in the top 10 happiest countries. The report is a collaborative effort between Gallup, the Wellbeing Research Centre, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Finland Tops the List as the Happiest Country

Nordic Countries Lead the Way

According to CNBC News, Gallup’s Managing Director Ilana Ron Leve emphasized that it is no surprise that Nordic nations dominate the happiness rankings. She explained that Finnish citizens have a high sense of life satisfaction, which contrasts sharply with the situation in the United States.

The term “Nordic” refers to the northern European region, primarily Scandinavia. It originates from the local term “Norden”, meaning “the North”. The Nordic region typically includes countries surrounding the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe.

United States Fails to Make the Top 10

The United States did not make it into the top 10 happiest countries this year. In fact, the country dropped from 23rd place in 2024 to 24th place in 2025. According to Leve, Americans are spending more time eating alone, which may contribute to lower happiness levels.

The report assessed more than 130 countries, evaluating factors such as per capita GDP, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels. Leve highlighted that philanthropy and community engagement play a crucial role in national happiness.

She further noted that happiness is not just about GDP or high wages but also trust, social connections, relationships, and overall well-being. Interestingly, Costa Rica and Mexico have entered the top 10 for the first time, proving that a high happiness index is achievable even in countries that are not the wealthiest.
