New Delhi, March 30, 2025 – In a major development aimed at easing Provident Fund (PF) access for millions of employees, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to roll out UPI and ATM-based withdrawal services. This move, expected to launch by May or June 2025, could transform how India’s workforce accesses their retirement savings.

PF Withdrawals Through UPI and ATMs – What to Expect
According to Sumita Dawra, Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, EPFO members will soon be able to view balances and make instant withdrawals directly via UPI and ATMs. The initiative targets over 7 crore PF account holders, and is expected to reduce processing times significantly.
Members will no longer have to wait days or navigate complicated withdrawal forms. With UPI integration, the PF system will become more transparent and real-time for users.
Why This is a Game-Changer
Currently, PF withdrawals are mostly done through the EPFO portal, which often involves delays. The new system will:
-
Allow direct access to funds for emergencies like medical treatment, marriage, or home construction
-
Offer balance viewing on UPI apps
-
Reduce paperwork and simplify the process
-
Enable quicker disbursals via ATM withdrawals
While no official launch date has been announced, the Ministry is optimistic about rolling out the features before June 2025.
India’s Social Security Coverage Sees Massive Growth
In a related update, the Ministry of Labour has also highlighted that India’s social security coverage has jumped from 24.4% in 2021 to 48.8% in 2024, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO).
-
Nearly 92 crore Indians, or 65% of the population, now benefit from at least one social security scheme.
-
48.8% of the population are receiving cash benefits, including PF, pensions, and insurance coverage.
This is largely due to the digitization of EPFO services, policy initiatives, and improved awareness among the workforce.
Conclusion
The launch of UPI and ATM-enabled PF withdrawals signals a major leap in India’s digital financial inclusion. For crores of salaried employees, this move will offer unprecedented ease and speed in managing their retirement funds.
