Bologna, Italy – April 2025 — Ducati has officially entered the motocross segment with the global unveiling of its first-ever off-road motorcycle, the Ducati Desmo450 MX. Developed in collaboration with motocross champions Tony Cairoli and Alessandro Lupino, this purpose-built machine is aimed squarely at professional racing and high-performance off-road riders.

Race-Engineered Powertrain with Desmodromic Excellence
At the heart of the Desmo450 MX lies a 449.6 cc single-cylinder engine equipped with Ducati’s signature Desmodromic valve system. This powerhouse delivers 62 bhp at 9,400 rpm and 53.5 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, with a redline at a staggering 11,900 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5-speed transmission featuring a quickshifter for upshifts, optimized for high-speed dirt action.
Ducati claims best-in-segment longevity for its engine maintenance, requiring piston replacement and valve clearance checks only after 45 hours of use, a benchmark for motocross standards.
Lightweight, Precision-Tuned Chassis for Maximum Control
The Desmo450 MX is built on an aluminum perimeter frame, designed to offer optimal rigidity and weight balance. Suspension duties are handled by premium 49 mm fully adjustable upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock, offering 310 mm and 301 mm of travel, respectively.
Braking is razor-sharp, with Galfer discs measuring 260 mm at the front (two-piston floating caliper) and 240 mm at the rear (single-piston caliper). The motocross-ready wheels — 21 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear — are wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion MX32 Mid-Soft tyres, engineered for variable dirt conditions.
Smart Electronics Tailored for the Dirt Track
While rooted in off-road tradition, the Ducati Desmo450 MX embraces modern performance tech with:
-
Traction Control
-
Launch Control
-
Engine Brake Control
-
Two Selectable Riding Modes
-
X-Link App Integration for enhanced telemetry and tuning
These rider aids ensure maximum control across a variety of challenging terrains and racing conditions.
Ducati’s Vision: Why Motocross, and Why Now?
Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, addressed the brand’s entry into motocross, stating:
“Over the past 18 months many people have asked me why Ducati decided to enter the world of professional off-road racing. The answer is simple: Ducati is a healthy company that generates resources, therefore has the opportunity to grow by opening up to a new segment of enthusiasts.”
Domenicali emphasized Ducati’s strategy to bring its racing DNA to new markets, ensuring that the Desmo450 MX is not just a one-off release, but a continuously developed platform supported by a specialized dealer network.
India Launch? Not Yet
Despite global fanfare, Ducati currently has no plans to launch the Desmo450 MX in India, citing limited demand for motocross bikes in the country. However, Ducati’s long-term vision could potentially change that based on evolving market trends.
