Bhubaneswar, October 26 (Udaipur Kiran): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday reported that the depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is expected to further strengthen into a cyclonic storm named ‘Montha’ within the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, the system has been moving northwestwards at a speed of around 10 km per hour over the past six hours. Currently, its center is located approximately 950 km southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 840 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh).
The weather agency stated that the system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28 as it moves northwestward towards the west-central Bay of Bengal.
As per forecasts, Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall between Kakinada and Machilipatnam, near Kalingapatnam on the Andhra Pradesh coast, between the evening and midnight of October 28.
During landfall, wind speeds may reach 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h, potentially causing damage to thatched houses, trees, and power lines in coastal and nearby areas.
Authorities in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have been placed on high alert as the system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions over the next few days.
The IMD has also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea until further notice, as sea conditions in the central and northern Bay of Bengal are expected to remain extremely rough and dangerous during this period.
