Kolkata, May 7: Political tensions and incidents of violence continue to escalate in West Bengal following the election results. The murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant of opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, has sparked a new controversy in the state’s political landscape. BJP leaders have labeled the incident as a political conspiracy, making serious allegations against the state government and administration. Tensions remain high in the area following the incident.
Dilip Ghosh, the victorious BJP candidate from the Kharagpur Sadar assembly constituency, expressed his disappointment during a media interaction in Newtown, stating that he had hoped for a cessation of violence and shootings after the elections, but that has not occurred. He accused those who failed to exert their influence during the elections of resorting to violence now. Ghosh demanded strict action from the police, insisting that anti-social elements must be stopped immediately.
He described the attack on Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant as a very serious matter and called for an immediate halt to the ongoing incidents in the state. Ghosh noted that while the BJP has come to power, the government has not yet been formally constituted. He alleged that the factional struggles within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are affecting BJP workers, who are being targeted.
BJP leader Dilip Halder referred to Chandranath Rath’s murder as a “targeted killing for political motives.” He stated that Rath had played an active role during the elections in Nandigram and Bhawanipur, which is why he was targeted. Halder claimed that the murder was executed with precision, as not a single bullet missed its mark. Suvendu Adhikari is taking the matter seriously and has assured that action will be taken according to the law.
A neighbor of Chandranath Rath recounted the shocking moment, saying, “At 10:30 PM, when I turned on the TV, I saw ‘Dada’s’ picture on the screen, and he had been shot three times. We were completely shattered. People in the house began to cry. Neighbors rushed to our side. Some had even left for Kolkata in their cars at that time. We could never have imagined such a tragedy could happen to us.”
