In a candid new interview with GQ for their April cover story, actor Ben Affleck has opened up for the first time about his recent divorce from Jennifer Lopez and reflected on his co-parenting relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
“Pretty Adult” Divorce with Jennifer Lopez
Affleck, 51, addressed the media frenzy surrounding his 2024 split from global pop icon Jennifer Lopez, calling much of the coverage “sensational” but clarifying that the actual experience was far less dramatic.
“My life is actually pretty drama-free,” Affleck said. “I’m sure in your mind you’re thinking, ‘Oh, well, you just got divorced. That’s not drama-free.’ But all of this is pretty adult.”
Affleck emphasized that despite the headlines, there was no explosive moment behind the split.
“If somebody sat down and talked to me about it… their eyes would glaze over with boredom,” he quipped, highlighting how everyday relationship challenges were exaggerated into tabloid fodder.
Relationship Differences and Respect for Lopez
Affleck spoke warmly of Lopez, whom he married in 2022, crediting her for handling fame with more finesse than he ever could.
“There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them,” he said. “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers.”
He pointed to differences in how the two approach public life as a source of tension but not resentment.
“You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship,” Affleck added.
The actor also commented on Lopez’s 2024 documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told”, which touched on their love story but didn’t reveal the more complex nuances of their split.
“It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had,’” he said. “The truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”
Despite their differences, Affleck reiterated his admiration for Lopez.
“I hope I was clear that really this is somebody I have a lot of respect for,” he said, dismissing any suggestion of animosity or judgment.
Co-Parenting with Jennifer Garner: A “Good Partnership”
Affleck also took time to reflect on his current co-parenting relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Garner. The pair, who divorced in 2018 after 13 years of marriage, share three children: Violet (19), Seraphina (16), and Samuel (13).
“I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mom, who’s wonderful and great and we work together well,” Affleck told GQ.
He described how they’ve taught their children to take celebrity gossip with a grain of salt.
“We used to have a thing, my ex-wife and I, when they would see something on a supermarket stand, we would say, ‘You know this isn’t always true because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters…’”
