Gareth Batty has been appointed as an assistant coach for Chennai Super Kings, leaving his position as head coach of Surrey after five years.

During his tenure at Surrey, Batty led the team to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024, making them the first side in nearly 60 years to achieve this feat. He also guided the team to the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast in all five years, including two appearances at Finals Day.

Batty’s association with Surrey spans 21 years, beginning as a player from 1998 to 2001 and returning in 2010. He captained the team from 2015 until 2017 and took over coaching responsibilities in 2022 after retiring as a player.

Reflecting on his move to CSK, Batty stated, “The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I’m looking forward to getting going.” He expressed gratitude towards Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, for his support during his time at the club.

Stewart praised Batty’s contributions both as a player and a coach, emphasizing his key role in one of Surrey’s most successful periods. He acknowledged the challenges of coaching at a club with high expectations and traditions, commending Batty for embracing the role. “His achievement in leading the side to three consecutive County Championship titles is a reflection of his hard work and understanding of the players,” Stewart said.

Following his transition to CSK, Batty’s initial responsibilities will include assisting with player retentions ahead of the November 15 deadline and devising strategies for the mini auction in December.
